Experiments and Discovery

The theme exhibition hall Experiments & Discovery values dissemination of scientific thinking and methods more than scientific knowledge itself. Within a lab-like setting, visitors will have an immersive experience of the great discovery process of the science pioneers, understand the scientific inquiry approach and learn about the scientific thinking.  

After the renovation, the hall presents 63 interactive exhibits in exhibition areas, namely the Scientific Discovery Plaza, Mechanics Lab I, Mechanics Lab II, EM Lab, Optics Lab and Life Science Lab. 

  

Highlights: 

EM Stage 

The EM Stage employs various technologies like high static voltage, power frequency high voltage, high-frequency high-voltage discharge technology and multi-media technology. Through the interaction between the host and the visitors, it vividly recreates the classic experiments and discovery of the renowned science pioneers including Benjamin Franklin, Faraday and Nikola Tesla, presenting the whole evolution process of EM science and highlighting the unity of electricity and magnetism.  

Galileo’s Inclined Plane Experiment 

Visitors may explore the law of uniformly accelerated motion by making small balls roll along the smooth surface of an inclined plane, listening to the sound of theballs hitting a bell, and then collecting and analyzing the experimental data of the rolling balls. 

Swing of Resonance Pendulum 

Visitors can experience resonance phenomena by sitting on a swing to sway back and forth. They can also observe how the swing impacts the spherical pendulum on the opposite and try to figure out why the spherical pendulum also sways in large amplitude. 

Spinning Chair 

This interactive is comprised of a human, a flywheel and a rotating platform. Its total angular momentum is constant without the effect of external moment; but its angular momentum changes when the flywheel is spinning and inclined. Are you careful enough to discover “the law of conservation of angular momentum”? 

Kaleidoscope 

Entering the magical kaleidoscope, visitors can see beautiful symmetric images formed by the interreflection of lights on the mirror’s surface and comprehend the principle of optical imaging behind it.
